Flight 93 Memorial

  FLight 93 Memorial Construction Begins

On September 11, 2001, Islamic terrorists hijacked United Airlines Flight 93, and the airliner crashed into a field in Somerset County Pennsylvania. To commemorate the heroism, courage and sacrifice of the passengers and crew of Flight 93, Congress passed the Flight 93 National Memorial Act creating a National Park for the memory of Flight.

Subsequent to the passing of the Flight 93 National Memorial Act the National Park Service held an international design competition to select the A/E Design Team to prepare the design documents for the construction of the National Monument.

RBA/Mollenhauer, formerly RBA Partners, Inc., was one of the key design professionals on the winning Design Team for the Memorial and was acknowledged as such in the National Park Service's Flight 93 National Memorial Newsletter No. 4, published in November 2005.

When our firm was first selected by the architect to be the civil engineering consultant for the project and the design competition we reviewed the architect's proposed Memorial design in great detail and determined that changes had to be made to the proposed design with respect to the site grading. Because of the enormous size of the project (2,200 acres) and the nature of the proposed design, the entire construction budget for the Memorial would have been expended in the required grading effort leaving no funds available for any of the other Monument improvements.

Over a three week period of time prior to the deadline for the final design competition submittal our firm did an intensive analysis of the site grading and arrived at a grading solution that would honor the architect's design intent and could be constructed in an economical manner. This exercise was extremely important because the design competition required that the proposed Memorial be constructed within the project budget.

The A/E Design Team began design of the Memorial in February 2007, in order to meet the proposed opening date of the Memorial on September 11, 2011. The Memorial is currently under construction.
